Overview

Tanzania is one of Africa's largest cashew producers. Nuts are grown mainly in the southern regions of Mtwara, Lindi and Ruvuma and along the coast. Raw cashew nuts (RCN) are sold through regional auctions under the warehouse-receipt system and exported in-shell, largely to India and Vietnam for processing; a growing volume is processed locally into kernels.

Tanzanian RCN is valued for good kernel outturn ratios (KOR) and large nut size.

Main markets: India, Vietnam (RCN); USA, Europe, Middle East (kernels).

Tanzania requires gemstones such as tanzanite to be value-added locally — rough tanzanite exports are restricted, so we supply cut stones from licensed dealers. Raw cashew and some oilseeds are sold through regulated auction systems with export levies; we advise on current rules at quotation.
