Overview

Tanzania is one of Africa's top sesame exporters. Sesame is grown in Lindi, Mtwara, Morogoro, Dodoma and Manyara and sold largely through warehouse-receipt auctions. Tanzanian white and mixed sesame has high oil content and is shipped to China, Japan, India, Turkey and the Middle East.

Sunflower seed is also widely grown in the central regions (Singida, Dodoma, Manyara).

Tanzania requires gemstones such as tanzanite to be value-added locally — rough tanzanite exports are restricted, so we supply cut stones from licensed dealers. Raw cashew and some oilseeds are sold through regulated auction systems with export levies; we advise on current rules at quotation.
